Convert EPD to another file type
To convert EPD files to another format, you need EssentialPIM or other Database software.
Convert a file to EPD
To convert other file formats to the "Encrypted Information Database" file type, you need software like EssentialPIM or a similar tool.
About EPD files
The .EPD file extension represents several distinct formats, making it a frequent source of user frustration. Its primary use is as an encrypted personal information database created by EssentialPIM (developed by Astonsoft). These files securely store contacts, calendars, and passwords. However, because they are proprietary and encrypted, they suffer from severe compatibility limits. You cannot open them in a standard text editor or spreadsheet without the correct password and the original software.
Another major use for .EPD is the Extended Position Description format in chess software like ChessBase. This format extends the standard Forsyth-Edwards Notation (FEN) by allowing multiple positions, engine evaluations, and annotations in a single plain-text file. While highly useful for automated engine analysis, bulk chess data often needs to be converted into PGN (Portable Game Notation) for better human readability or for sharing across standard chess platforms.
Historically, the .EPD extension was also used for legacy Express Publisher documents. These obsolete page layout files are notoriously difficult to open today because the original software is no longer supported on modern operating systems. Furthermore, .EPD is sometimes used for Electronic Patient Dossiers (eHealth Suisse standard), ePadh encrypted e-books, and Juki embroidery machine patterns.
Conversion Solutions: If you have a legacy Express Publisher document, converting it to PDF is strictly required for archiving or printing today. Chess .EPD files should be converted to TXT or PGN for easy editing and web use. Juki embroidery files must often be converted to universal formats like PES or DST to work on modern machines. For EssentialPIM databases, direct conversion is impossible without the password; you must decrypt it in the native app to export data to CSV. Convert.Guru analyzes your EPD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert EPD file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use EssentialPIM or similar software from the "Encrypted Database Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to EPD, try EssentialPIM or another comparable tool in the "Encrypted Database Storage" category.
The EPD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EPD converter.
