About EPC files

The .EPC extension is a fragmented identifier shared by three distinct, incompatible industries: electrical engineering, business process management, and gaming.

  1. PSS/E Power System Data: The most common use (approx. 27%) is associated with Siemens PSS/E (formerly PTI). These files contain critical data for simulating electrical transmission networks. Engineers often struggle with these files because they are strictly formatted (often fixed-width text or binary) and proprietary, making them impossible to analyze in tools like Microsoft Excel without conversion.
  2. Event-driven Process Chain: In business modeling, an .EPC file is a flowchart diagram, often created in ARIS Express. While these are technically XML-based, the visualization is lost if you try to open them in a code editor. Users typically need to convert these into PDF, JPG, or BPMN formats to share process maps with stakeholders who don't have the modeling software installed.
  3. Game Data Archives: Titles like Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock use .EPC as a container format for assets (audio, textures). These are essentially renamed ZIP or proprietary compressed packages that gamers often try to unpack to access game media.

Recommendation:
For PSS/E data, the goal is analysis; convert to CSV or XLSX. For ARIS diagrams, the goal is visibility; convert to PDF or Vector formats.
