About BRN files
The .brn extension acts as a catch-all for several unrelated data formats, creating significant confusion for users trying to open one. Primarily (approx. 56% of cases), it is a Device Firmware Update file generated by Sunplus Technology (SUNP) tools, widely used in set-top boxes, media players, and embedded systems. These are binary "blobs" designed to be flashed directly to hardware, meaning they cannot be viewed or edited in standard text processors like Microsoft Word or Notepad++. Trying to open them usually results in unintelligible gibberish.
However, the extension is also claimed by niche software: Metso Bruno uses it for crushing plant simulations, WIKA Mobile Control for crane configuration data, and legacy tools like BrainStorm or Mach3 for logic and knowledge mapping. This proprietary lock-in is the main problem - without the specific originating software, the data is inaccessible.
For Sunplus firmware, "conversion" typically means extracting contents to BIN or HEX for analysis using hex editors. For BrainStorm or Metso files, the goal is often converting proprietary logic into usable formats like PDF for documentation, CSV for data analysis, or XML for interoperability.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BRN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted PRN, GPX, VTK and GED files.
The BRN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BRN converter.
