About ENW files

The .enw file is an EndNote Import File used exclusively to store structured bibliographic citation data. These files contain essential academic metadata - such as author names, publication titles, publication years, and journal information. Researchers typically download .enw files from academic databases like PubMed, Google Scholar, or IEEE Xplore to build their reference libraries in EndNote.

Despite its widespread use in academia, the .enw format presents significant interoperability challenges. It is a proprietary, plain-text format that relies on a specific tagging structure (e.g., %A for Author, %T for Title). If you do not have an active, paid subscription to EndNote, or if you prefer using alternative reference managers like Zotero or Mendeley, handling native .enw files can trigger import errors or missing metadata. Furthermore, while you can open the file in a basic text editor, reading raw tagged text is highly inefficient for large datasets.

To bypass these limitations, converting your .enw files is the most pragmatic approach. For universal reference management compatibility, convert to RIS. If you are typesetting academic papers in LaTeX, convert directly to BIB (BibTeX). For database entry or bulk data analysis, convert to CSV to format the citations into a clean spreadsheet.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ENW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BIBTEX, RIS, ENV, PDF, BIB, TXT, SDOCX, EWN, JPG, ZIP, ENC, SPV and APKG files.

The ENW Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ENW converter.
