Extract text from ENLX files

The .ENLX file type is a proprietary archive format generated by Clarivate EndNote, the industry-standard reference management software. It is technically a Compressed Library that bundles two critical components into a single file: the ENL database file (containing citation metadata) and a Data folder (containing PDF attachments, figures, and internal indexes). Users primarily encounter this format when colleagues share research libraries via email or during backup procedures.
The main drawback for .ENLX files is the strict software dependency. If you do not have a paid subscription to EndNote, you cannot natively open the file to view the bibliography or access the enclosed research papers. Furthermore, open-source alternatives like Zotero or Mendeley cannot directly import .ENLX files; they require standard interchange formats like RIS, BIB (BibTeX), or XML.
However, because the .ENLX format is internally identical to a standard ZIP archive, the most practical workaround for immediate access is to rename the file extension from .ENLX to ZIP. This allows you to extract the contents using any standard archive tool. While this grants access to the PDF files stored in the .Data/PDF subfolder, the bibliographic data remains locked in the binary ENL file unless converted using the original software.
