Convert ENLX to another file type
To convert ENLX libraries to another format, you need EndNote or other Compressed software.
Convert a file to ENLX
To convert other file formats to the "Reference Library Archive" file type, you need software like EndNote or a similar tool.
About ENLX files
The .ENLX file format is a compressed reference library used exclusively by EndNote, a commercial reference management software developed by Clarivate. It serves as an archive to bundle a user's primary database (the ENL file) and the associated .Data folder, which contains linked PDFs, images, and formatting templates. This format is typically used to back up entire bibliographies or share them with colleagues. Despite its convenience for EndNote users, the .ENLX format presents significant disadvantages. It relies on a proprietary ecosystem. Accessing the contents natively requires an active, expensive EndNote subscription. Standard web browsers, text editors, and even alternative open-source reference managers like Zotero cannot open an .ENLX file directly. This locks your research data behind a paywall and creates massive friction when collaborating with researchers who use different tools. To regain control of your data, you should convert your references to open standards like RIS, BIB (BibTeX), or XML. These formats are universally accepted by almost all citation software. However, converting to text-based formats means you will separate the citation data from the actual PDF attachments. Because .ENLX is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters usually fail to process it. Only the original software can reliably export the structured bibliography data. However, convert.guru provides a pragmatic solution. Just drag and drop your .ENLX file to see what it is and convert it if supported. Because an .ENLX file is internally built as a standard ZIP archive, our analysis tools can unpack the embedded database and attached PDFs, allowing you to salvage your research without buying an EndNote license.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ENLX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ENLX file to RIS, ENL, TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD or MARKDOWN, you can use EndNote or similar software from the "Archived Reference Library" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to ENLX, try EndNote or another comparable tool in the "Archived Reference Library" category.
The ENLX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ENLX converter.
