About ECO files

The .eco file extension is highly fragmented and serves multiple distinct purposes across different industries. Primarily, it acts as a game world save or configuration file for Eco, a multiplayer simulation game by Strange Loop Games. In the engineering and electronics sectors, it functions as an Engineering Change Order file utilized by PCB design software like Siemens PADS or Protel. Other niche uses include encrypted carbon footprint data from Ecospeed, building performance analysis in Autodesk Ecotect Analysis, and legacy database files for the obsolete Ecco Pro Personal Information Manager.

This fragmentation creates a major problem for users: it is impossible to know what data an .eco file holds just by looking at the extension. If it is a game save, the underlying format is usually a standard ZIP archive, resulting in massive files exceeding hundreds of megabytes. Game configuration files are typically uncompressed JSON. Conversely, CAD and EDA versions are proprietary, closed binaries that require expensive software licenses to read or modify. Encrypted Ecospeed files cannot be opened without the original software and decryption keys.

If you have an Eco game file, the best conversion targets are ZIP for world saves or JSON and TXT for configuration settings. For PCB design files, standard online converters will fail because the format is proprietary. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the routing data. We inspect the file signature and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, like ZIP or JSON, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ECO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EKO, EC0, PNG, MP3, PDF, DOCX, BIN, TFA, EVE and SSP files.

The ECO Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ECO converter.
