A .tfa file most commonly functions as an electronic government application form, specifically a Temporary Form Archive. These are often generated by Dutch government portals like the UWV or produced by software like TeamForms and Spirit Juridische Software. Alternatively, in the gaming industry, .tfa files serve as UnityFS game asset bundles within the Unity game engine, or as zlib-compressed Texture File Archives for titles like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. In bioinformatics, the extension is used for FASTA amino acid sequence files utilized in protein alignment.
Because the .tfa extension is shared among completely unrelated industries, users constantly struggle with these files. Dutch government forms are closed, proprietary systems that standard document readers cannot open; they are meant exclusively to save session data to be uploaded back to an online portal. Game archives are heavily compressed or encrypted containers requiring dedicated extraction tools, preventing users from viewing 3D models or textures directly.
