About DXD files
A .DXD file typically functions as either a dental CAD restoration project used in Dentsply Sirona CEREC and exocad workflows, or a high-speed data acquisition file generated by Dewesoft X. Less commonly, it serves as a CAD drawing for Daxiong CAD or a data extraction setting file in AutoCAD.
Both primary formats are highly proprietary and pose major compatibility challenges. Dental .DXD files contain complex 3D scans, margin lines, and clinical metadata packaged for dental labs. Dewesoft .DXD files store raw, synchronized time-series sensor data. You cannot natively open either file type in standard web browsers or basic document viewers. Relying on the original software often forces users to deal with expensive licenses, hardware dongles, or restricted workstation access.
For dental applications, the best conversion target is usually STL or PLY to view the 3D meshes. Dewesoft users typically need to export data to CSV, MAT, or XLSX for downstream analysis in MATLAB or Microsoft Excel. Converting these files manually often strips out proprietary project settings or sensor calibration history.
Because .DXD files contain specialized industry data, standard online converters routinely fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Since dental .DXD files are often unencrypted ZIP containers, our analysis can detect the underlying format, allowing you to extract the embedded STL models directly.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DXD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DXD file to STL or CSV, you can use exocad or similar software from the "Dental CAD & Data Acquisition" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The DXD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DXD converter.
