About DRC files

.DRC files are highly fragmented, meaning the extension is shared by multiple completely different formats. The most common use is a compressed 3D geometry data file developed by Google under the Draco open-source project. Draco compresses 3D meshes and point cloud data to reduce the size of 3D graphics for faster web transmission. The second major use is for storing oscilloscope waveform data recordings captured by lab hardware like Hantek PC Oscilloscopes or PicoScope. Additionally, it can represent a PCB Design Rule Check report from Altium, a Delphi resource script from Embarcadero, or even an obsolete BBC Dirac video file.

The main disadvantage of .DRC files is format ambiguity. Your operating system cannot inherently tell if it should open a 3D viewer, a lab data suite, or a text editor. Furthermore, Draco-compressed 3D files cannot be directly edited in standard CAD software like Blender without specific import plugins. Oscilloscope .DRC files are proprietary binary files that trap your data within the manufacturer's specific software, preventing easy mathematical analysis in external tools.
