About VEM files

A .vem file is most commonly a Sanitized Email Attachment created by GFI MailEssentials. This occurs when an email security system intercepts a potentially dangerous attachment (like a DOCM or EXE) and renames it to .vem to prevent accidental execution. Because the file extension is changed, standard software like Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat cannot recognize or open it effectively, leading to "Unknown File Type" errors.

Less frequently, a .vem file may be a legacy Video Email Message used by AOL Instant Messenger or Meta Media software. These are obsolete compressed video files that modern media players like VLC often fail to decode. A very small percentage may be compressed files from Sony MicroVault USB drives.
