About DRAW files

The .draw file extension is highly fragmented and represents entirely different data types depending on its source. Most commonly, it is a proprietary embroidery design file utilizing the Microsoft Compound format, heavily used by Pulse Microsystems and Bernina. Alternatively, it acts as a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) graphical model for Hexagon PC-DMIS, a lightweight JSON-based virtual whiteboard file from Excalidraw, or an XML-based vector drawing from LibreCAD or draw.io.

The primary disadvantage of the .draw format is its lack of standardization. It is highly proprietary in its industrial applications. A .draw file generated by a CMM machine is completely incompatible with an embroidery .draw file. Opening these files often requires a restrictive license or subscription to niche software that can cost thousands of dollars. They are not supported by web browsers natively, making sharing with clients or non-technical team members extremely difficult.

Users typically need to convert these files into universal formats to make them readable. For vector illustrations and diagrams, converting to PDF or SVG is the best solution, as it preserves scalability. For embroidery files, users must target universal machine formats like DST or PES, though some proprietary thread palette information may be lost or flattened during the transition.

Because industrial .draw files use closed, proprietary binary structures, standard online converters almost always fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. We analyze the file signature to determine its true origin, extract readable text or XML/JSON trees, and expose internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DRAW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DRAWIO, DWG, ODG, JPEG, VC6, KPX, FC7, PDF and IMAGE files.

The DRAW Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DRAW converter.
