A .VC6 file is primarily a legacy 2D CAD drawing associated with VectorCAD or older versions of Ashlar-Vellum drafting software (specifically Vellum). These files store precise vector geometry, lines, and dimensions used in engineering and architectural schematics. The main challenge with .VC6 files is their proprietary nature; they are effectively locked archives that modern industry standards like AutoCAD (.DWG) cannot natively read. Relying on the original legacy software to view them is often impossible due to licensing costs or OS incompatibility (e.g., Windows 98/XP era software).
For engineering workflows, the best approach is converting these drawings to DXF or DWG, which restores editability in modern CAD tools. For simple archiving or client review, converting to PDF is recommended to freeze the layout without requiring specialized viewers.
Note: In rare cases (approx. 1%), a .VC6 file may be a virtual disk image created by Virtual CD version 6 by H+H Software. These act like physical CDs but are locked in a version-specific format. Users with these large files (often exceeding 100MB) should convert them to standard ISO images to mount them on modern operating systems like Windows 10/11.
