About DOS files
The .dos file extension is highly fragmented and serves entirely different purposes depending on its origin. Most commonly, it functions as a SWIFT financial message, specifically an MT940 bank statement or a print report generated by the Unisys Global Banking system. In other contexts, it represents a legacy 16-bit MS-DOS executable program, or even acts as a disguise for 7z and rar compressed archives to bypass strict email attachment filters. There is also a rare use case involving legacy Microsoft Word documents related to specific advice column software.
The major disadvantage of .dos financial files is their raw, machine-readable text structure. SWIFT messages are built for bank-to-bank transfers, making them incredibly difficult for humans to read or audit without expensive, proprietary financial software. Legacy executable versions of .dos face a different problem: they are completely unsupported on modern 64-bit operating systems and require emulators like DOSBox. Disguised archives cause massive confusion for end-users who do not realize they need extraction tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR.
To make financial .dos data usable, you must convert it to CSV for spreadsheet analysis or PDF for clean, readable archiving. If your file is a hidden archive, extracting it to a standard ZIP format restores compatibility across all platforms.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DOS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The DOS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DOS converter.
