Convert a file to LET
To convert other file formats to the "Legacy Document File" file type, you need software like Microsoft Works or a similar tool.
About LET files
.LET files are primarily legacy document files used to store letter templates and word processing documents. Historically, they were created as Microsoft Compound documents by Microsoft Works, or as letter files by Corel WordPerfect. Far less commonly, the extension is used for layout letterheads in Nemetschek Allplan, report layout templates for QuickReport, or even specialized strong-motion earthquake data files (Ljubljana EMELET format).
To natively open the most common text-based .LET files, you originally needed Microsoft Works (which is now discontinued) or Corel WordPerfect. You can find more historical context on the Microsoft Works Wikipedia page or the WordPerfect Wikipedia page.
Today, users need to convert .LET files because the original software is obsolete. These proprietary files are not natively supported by modern web browsers, Google Docs, or standard text editors. Trying to open them in a basic editor often results in garbled text and unreadable layout code due to the binary formatting. If the file is from Microsoft Works, you face a closed ecosystem that Microsoft completely abandoned in 2007.
The best conversion targets are DOCX, PDF, RTF, or TXT. Converting to PDF locks in the original visual layout, while DOCX allows for modern editing. Be aware that complex legacy formatting, obscure macros, or font settings from the 1990s will likely be lost or altered during the conversion process.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary format heavily tied to legacy application code. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the exact formatting data. We can inspect the file, extract raw text strings, and if our analysis detects a supported underlying structure, viewing or full conversion to a modern format may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LET file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert LET file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Microsoft Works or similar software from the "Word Processor Letter Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to LET, try Microsoft Works or another comparable tool in the "Word Processor Letter Storage" category.
The LET Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LET converter.
