The .DMW file extension serves two distinct, highly specialized purposes. Most commonly, it is a JetBrains dotMemory Workspace Snapshot, generated by JetBrains dotMemory or JetBrains Rider to store memory profiling data for .NET applications. Alternatively, it is a DigitalMicrograph Workspace file used by the Gatan Microscopy Suite for electron microscopy analysis.
These formats pose significant challenges for standard users. Both are proprietary workspace containers rather than standard media or document files. A JetBrains .DMW file captures the exact state of an application's RAM during profiling, which means the file size can easily exceed several gigabytes. It requires expensive, specialized developer software to interpret the data. Similarly, Gatan workspace files are locked into their specific scientific ecosystem and cannot be opened by standard web browsers or image viewers. Sharing these files with clients or non-developers is often frustrating because they simply cannot open them.
Because .DMW files do not hold conventional text or image data natively, directly converting them to formats like PDF, JPG, or CSV using standard online converters usually fails. To extract actionable reports or microscopy images, you typically must use the original software's export functions.
However, this file format is difficult to open or convert precisely because only the original software can properly map the complex internal data structures.
