The .DMO file extension is highly fragmented and generally serves two entirely different purposes. In industrial manufacturing, it is used as a DMIS (Dimensional Measuring Interface Standard) inspection results file. These files are generated by coordinate measuring machine (CMM) software like Hexagon PC-DMIS and InnovMetric PolyWorks to store 3D measurement and quality control data. In the software and gaming industries, .DMO is heavily used as a Game Demo Recording or replay file for classic and modern PC games, including Descent, Half-Life 2, Duke Nukem 3D, and AssaultCube. Some hardware, such as OKM Metal Detectors, also use the extension for 3D ground scanner data.
Opening a .DMO file is difficult due to its varying formats. Industrial .DMO files are often locked behind expensive, proprietary software licenses, making it incredibly hard to share measurement results with clients or suppliers. Gaming .DMO files do not contain video data; they only contain controller inputs and coordinate data. This means a game replay .DMO file will only work in the exact game engine version that recorded it. If the game updates, the demo file usually breaks or desynchronizes.
To make this data accessible, conversion is the best path forward. For metrology and CMM data, convert the .DMO file to CSV or TXT to import the structured measurements into Microsoft Excel for reporting. For game replays, you cannot convert the file directly to video. You must load the .DMO in the original game and capture the screen to an MP4 or WebM video file for archiving. Some variants are simply SQLite databases or GZIP compressed data.
