Convert DEV to another file type
To convert your DEV file to another format, you need Dev-C++ or other Developer software.
Convert a file to DEV
To convert other file formats to the "IDE Project File" file type, you need software like Dev-C++ or a similar tool.
About DEV files
The .dev extension is a classic example of a filename collision, serving multiple unrelated industries. Most commonly (approx. 36%), it identifies a project file for Bloodshed Dev-C++, a legacy Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for C and C++. These files are essentially plain text configurations (similar to INI files) that organize source code paths, compiler flags, and linkers. The primary disadvantage is that Dev-C++ is largely obsolete; opening these files in modern environments like Visual Studio or VS Code requires manual migration or conversion. Users often struggle because they cannot double-click to open the project without the original, outdated software installed.
Secondary uses include proprietary configuration files for Carel pCO programmable controllers (used in HVAC automation), Schlumberger Petrel well data, or even Windows device drivers. These variants are often binary and strictly locked to their parent hardware.
Conversion Strategies:
For Dev-C++: The best approach is to convert/view the file as Plain Text (.TXT). This reveals the file structure, allowing you to copy settings into a modern CMake or SLN file.
For Carel/Industrial: These often require the specific proprietary suite (like 1tool) to export data to CSV or PDF for reporting.
For Android/System: These are system markers; generally, no conversion is possible or safe.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DEV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DEV file to MP4, SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR or PIF, you can use Dev-C++ or similar software from the "C/C++ Project Configuration" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to DEV, try Dev-C++ or another comparable tool in the "C/C++ Project Configuration" category.
The DEV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DEV converter.
