About DEV files

The .DEV file extension is highly fragmented and used by entirely different systems. Most commonly, it serves as a C/C++ project file for the Bloodshed Dev-C++ Integrated Development Environment (IDE). In this context, it stores compiler settings, linked library paths, and project configurations, but not the actual source code. Other distinct applications use the .DEV extension for hardware configurations. This includes Carel programmable controllers, well deviation survey data in Schlumberger Petrel, and terrain generator device files for World Machine. Additionally, the Honista app uses .DEV files for application settings backups, which are internally formatted as JSON. On Linux and Android, the /dev path represents device block paths that interface with hardware, rather than standard data files.

The main disadvantage of .DEV files is their complete lack of standardisation. Because dozens of different programs use the same extension, operating systems frequently fail to open them correctly. Dev-C++ is an outdated IDE, making legacy project files difficult to migrate to modern environments like Microsoft Visual Studio. Proprietary configuration files (like those from Petrel or Carel) require expensive or highly specialised software.

Conversion depends entirely on the file's origin. For Dev-C++ projects, you can convert or extract the contents to plain text (TXT) or XML to migrate your compiler settings. Honista backups can be instantly renamed or converted to JSON for manual editing. If the file is compressed, it can be extracted to a standard ZIP archive. Convert.Guru analyzes your DEV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The DEV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DEV converter.
