About AIA files
The .AIA file format primarily functions as an App Inventor Project created by MIT App Inventor. These files act as a container for all visual programming blocks, user interface layouts, and multimedia assets required to develop an Android application. A minor secondary use for the .AIA extension is an Adobe Illustrator Action file, which stores recorded macros to automate tasks in Adobe Illustrator. The primary disadvantage of the MIT App Inventor format is its strict platform dependency. It is a proprietary development format that requires an active internet connection to access the MIT web interface or a specialized local server to open. It is a working project archive, not a playable app, meaning users cannot install it directly on an Android device. Similarly, the Adobe variant is entirely locked into the Adobe ecosystem and requires a monthly subscription to utilize. To make an .AIA project usable, the best conversion target is compiling it into a deployable APK (Android Package) or AAB (Android App Bundle). Alternatively, because the underlying structure is a standard ZIP archive, you can rename the extension to ZIP to manually extract internal media assets like PNG images or MP3 audio. Standard online converters usually fail to process .AIA files because they incorrectly attempt to parse them as flat documents rather than compressed directory trees or proprietary Adobe macros. If our analysis detects the standard ZIP structure of an App Inventor project, extracting the internal content or viewing the embedded data may still be possible.

The AIA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AIA converter.
