About DE files
The .de file extension primarily acts as a project file for diagramming tools like Diagrams.net (formerly Draw.io), Mindenite Diagram Editor, and DrawExpress. Internally, these native diagram files are typically structured as plain JSON or XML data.
However, in real-world scenarios, .de is a heavily overloaded extension. Users frequently encounter .de files that are actually standard PDF documents, JPG images, ZIP archives, or saved HTML webpages. This happens due to browser download glitches where the German top-level domain (.de) is mistakenly applied as the file extension instead of the true format.
The primary disadvantage of native .de diagram files is their lack of interoperability. They are proprietary or highly specific to niche software, meaning clients or colleagues cannot open them natively without installing the exact same tool. Furthermore, if the file is just an incorrectly named PDF or JPG, standard operating systems will fail to open it outright, causing confusion.
To make these files usable, conversion is mandatory. For sharing or printing vector data, convert diagram .de files to PDF or SVG. For web embedding and general viewing, target PNG or WebP. If you are unsure what your .de file actually contains, drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The DE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DE converter.
