A .ddoc file is an XML-based Estonian digitally signed document container. It encapsulates one or multiple files - such as a PDF or DOCX - along with cryptographic signatures that ensure data integrity and authenticity.

The primary disadvantage of the .ddoc format is its severe lack of international interoperability. Native web browsers and standard document viewers cannot read it. If you send a .ddoc file to anyone outside the Baltics, they will see an unrecognizable attachment and fail to open it. Furthermore, .ddoc is a legacy standard that has been officially phased out in favor of the newer EU-compliant bdoc and asice formats.
To make the contents accessible, you must extract or convert the file. For general viewing, printing, and web sharing, extract the internal payload to PDF or DOCX. Be aware that extracting the files completely destroys the legal cryptographic signature. For long-term archiving that preserves legal validity, you should upgrade the signature container to ASICE.
