The .CDOC extension is primarily associated with the DigiDoc system, the national standard for digital signatures and encryption in Estonia. These files are Encrypted Digital Document Containers that wrap standard files (like PDF or DOCX) in a secure XML-based shell. The core disadvantage is accessibility: you cannot simply double-click to open them without the specific DigiDoc4 Client and, crucially, the recipient's smart card or mobile ID for decryption. If you are outside the Baltic region or lack the specific private key, these files are essentially digital bricks. For archiving or sharing with international partners, you must decrypt and extract the internal files to standard formats like PDF or DOCX.
A secondary, distinct use case (approx. 17%) is a Clicker Document created by Crick Software's Clicker (specifically versions like Clicker 5 and 7). This is a literacy tool used in education. These files are proprietary and often cause friction when sending work home to parents or teachers who do not have the paid software installed. For these users, the goal is converting the proprietary layout into a universal DOCX for editing or a PDF for printing, ensuring the content is readable without a $200+ software license.
