About DCL files
The .dcl extension is a classic example of a "filename collision," used by three completely different legacy systems. The most statistically probable file is a Security Audit Report generated by Somarsoft DumpSec, a legacy utility used by administrators to dump file system permissions and user audit data. These files often contain critical compliance data but are locked inside an outdated, proprietary format that modern auditing tools cannot parse natively.
Another frequent use case, particularly in engineering environments, is the AutoCAD Dialog Control Language file. These are plain text scripts used by Autodesk AutoCAD to define the layout of custom dialog boxes (buttons, sliders, input fields). While these are technically just text, users often struggle to open them because Windows does not associate the extension with a text editor by default, leading to the dreaded "Windows cannot open this file" error.
Less commonly, a .dcl file might be a Document Cluster associated with the iSilo document reader, used for compressing web pages and documents for older handheld devices (like PalmOS).
Best Conversion Targets:
For DumpSec Reports: Convert to CSV or XLSX to analyze the permission data in Excel, or PDF for archiving the audit trail.
For AutoCAD DCL: Treat these as source code. Convert/Rename to TXT to edit in Notepad++ or VS Code.
For iSilo Documents: The proprietary compression is difficult to handle; the best path is converting the original source to EPUB or PDF for modern e-readers.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DCL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DCL file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use DumpSec or similar software from the "Security Audit Report" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to DCL, try DumpSec or another comparable tool in the "Security Audit Report" category.
The DCL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DCL converter.
