This specific format was engineered to bypass server timeout limitations during website migrations.
The main disadvantage of the .DAF format is its proprietary structure. Unlike standard ZIP or TAR archives, you cannot open a .DAF file natively in Windows or macOS, nor can you extract it with popular tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR. This forces users to rely on the Duplicator plugin or its standalone installer.php script to access their own data. Furthermore, secondary variations of the .DAF extension include daily fiscal settlement reports for Novitus printers and compressed Adobe Shockwave Flash game data, creating confusion for users who do not know the origin of their file.
Users typically need to convert .DAF files to standard ZIP or TAR archives to manually inspect theme files, extract the SQL database, or migrate away from the Duplicator ecosystem.
