About CX files

The .CX file extension represents multiple distinct proprietary formats, primarily the Biological network exchange format used by Cytoscape and the CAD project exchange file used by CADMATIC. Biological .CX files store complex network graph data - like protein interactions - using a custom JSON schema. Conversely, CADMATIC .CX files are ZIP compressed archives containing XML 3D plant and ship design data. Users frequently need to convert these files because they are tied to expensive or highly specific desktop applications. Biological .CX files can exceed several gigabytes, crashing standard text editors, while CADMATIC files require proprietary enterprise licenses to open. Standard visual conversion to formats like PDF or PNG fails because the files only store raw node data, not rendered graphics. Often only the original software can properly read or export the visual data. The most practical solution is extracting the raw data into JSON, XML, or TXT to parse it using standard data science tools. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CXP, PDF, CYS, IMS and PHC files.

The CX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CX converter.
