About CVR files
The .CVR extension is a digital chameleon, primarily serving two distinct, proprietary roles that often leave users confused. Most commonly, it is a Microsoft Crash Report file generated by Microsoft Office (specifically Word and Excel) to act as a temporary lifeboat for unsaved data during an application failure. These files are typically binary-encoded, meaning if you try to open them in a standard text editor, you will see unintelligible "garbage" text mixed with fragments of your document. Users frequently encounter these when searching for lost work, only to find the format is locked down and not directly supported by current recovery wizards.
Alternatively, a .CVR file may be a Fax Cover Page created by Microsoft Fax and Scan or legacy software like WinFax Pro. In this context, the file defines the layout, logos, and fields of a fax header. The key problem here is obsolescence; modern workflows do not recognize these cover sheets, rendering old templates inaccessible. A third, rarer variant involves Corel Versions archives or data files for Quicken.
Conversion Best Practices:
For Data Recovery: If you are trying to salvage text from a crash report, convert the .CVR to TXT (Plain Text). You will lose formatting, but you can copy-paste the raw strings of your lost document.
For Fax/Archiving: Convert fax cover sheets to PDF or TIFF to preserve the visual layout for viewing on modern devices.
For Editing: Attempt to rename the extension to DOC or DOCX and open it in Word, though this method is hit-or-miss depending on the file's corruption level.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CVR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CVR file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use Microsoft Word or similar software from the "Crash Data Recovery" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The CVR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CVR converter.
