About CVR files

The .CVR file format is primarily used by Microsoft Office as an application crash recovery file. When an application like Word or Excel unexpectedly terminates, it generates a .CVR crash report containing system state data and memory telemetry to assist in diagnostics. Alternatively, .CVR files were heavily used in the 1990s and early 2000s as fax cover pages by the now-obsolete Symantec WinFax Pro software. Occasionally, they act as version control files for legacy Corel and Quicken databases.

The main disadvantage of a .CVR file is its strictly proprietary, context-dependent nature. Modern operating systems cannot natively open a .CVR file. Microsoft's crash reports are binary telemetry files, meaning they lack the actual text of your unsaved document. Meanwhile, WinFax cover pages require 32-bit legacy software running on old Windows environments, making them incredibly difficult to access today.

Because they lack standard document structures, standard online converters completely fail to process .CVR files. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible using convert.guru. Our engine will analyze the file's binary signature to determine if it is a crash report or a legacy fax cover. If the file contains unencrypted text strings, routing details, or embedded raster image fragments, we will extract and display them, allowing you to salvage the data as a standard TXT or PDF file.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CVR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted WCVR, CBR, CDR, TMP, PDF, JPG, CBZ, TXT, PNG, DOCX, ZIP, MBSA and PPTX files.
