About CTX files

The .CTX file extension is primarily used for highly specialized Context or Script files across vastly different applications. The most common real-world uses are ICE-encoded weapon scripts in Counter-Strike, password-protected note-taking documents in CherryTree, and CAD catalogue context files in AVEVA PDMS. It is also utilized for chromatography analysis by Hitachi HPLC software and conservation data models in SMART.

The massive disadvantage of the .CTX format is its extreme fragmentation. Because it is used by over a dozen different proprietary systems, double-clicking the file almost always results in an operating system error. You cannot natively open a .CTX file unless you already have the specific software installed. Furthermore, many of these files are deliberately locked. For example, a CherryTree .CTX file is heavily encrypted (typically an encrypted SQLite database or a 7z archive), meaning it is entirely unreadable without the user's password. Valve's Source Engine scripts are often ICE-encoded to prevent gamers from tampering with weapon statistics.

Because of these closed, proprietary structures, standard online converters universally fail to process .CTX files. They simply do not know which variant of the format they are looking at. If your file is a plain text configuration script, converting it to TXT or PDF is the best target. If it is a compiled Source engine texture script, extracting the underlying PNG may be possible. Whether it is an underlying UTF-16 text file, an embedded PNG header, or an encrypted 7z archive, our tool will tell you exactly what you are dealing with and offer viewing or conversion options if the underlying format is supported.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CTX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CTEX, CXT, TXT, ZIP, TCX, CRX, KML, DXR, CRTX, CTB, CDR, PNG and CSV files.

The CTX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CTX converter.
