About CRD files
The .CRD extension is utilized by multiple distinct software ecosystems, creating significant confusion for users trying to open them. The most common variation (74%) is the Windows Credential Backup, a secure, encrypted system file generated by the Windows Credential Manager to archive saved passwords and login details. Users often encounter these files when migrating to a new PC, only to find they cannot be opened like standard documents due to strict encryption designed to prevent unauthorized access.
However, a significant number of users possess legacy Windows Cardfile databases - an obsolete digital Rolodex format from Windows 3.1 - or Survey Coordinate Data files used by engineering tools like Carlson Software. These older or specialized formats present a major accessibility barrier: modern operating systems lack native support for Cardfiles, locking valuable contact data inside outdated binaries, while survey data requires expensive CAD software to view.
For Windows Credential files, conversion is generally impossible due to security; the correct workflow is 'restoring' via the Control Panel. For Cardfiles and Survey Data, however, conversion is essential. Users should convert legacy Cardfiles to CSV or XLSX for use in Microsoft Excel or modern CRMs. Survey coordinates are best converted to DXF or DWG for compatibility with AutoCAD or standard TXT for raw data analysis. Convert.guru helps you identify your specific .CRD type and navigate the correct viewing or conversion pathway.

The CRD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CRD converter.
