Convert a file to CRD

To convert other file formats to the "Encrypted Credential Backup" file type, you need software like Windows Credential Manager or a similar tool.

About CRD files

A .CRD file is predominantly a Windows Credential Backup file generated by the Microsoft Windows Credential Manager. It stores encrypted usernames, passwords, and security certificates. Another historically significant use for the .CRD extension is the legacy Windows Cardfile format, a personal information manager bundled with early Windows systems like Windows 3.1. Other niche uses include coordinate data for Carlson Software, audio recordings from the Skvalex Android app, and defibrillator event data from ZOLL Medical.

The main disadvantage of .CRD files is their proprietary and highly context-dependent nature. A Windows credential backup file is useless outside of the Windows ecosystem and cannot be read as plain text due to strict Windows Data Protection API (DPAPI) encryption. Legacy Cardfile databases require obsolete 16-bit software or dedicated emulators to open natively. This makes extracting old contacts or recovering encrypted data highly frustrating for modern users.

For modern accessibility, legacy Cardfile .CRD files should be converted to CSV or TXT for database migration and editing. If you need a read-only, printable record for archiving, convert to PDF. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing obsolete software. Note: Encrypted Windows credential backups generally cannot be directly converted to plain text without the original Windows user account and password.

The CRD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CRD converter.
