About COT files
A .COT file is most frequently a Capture One thumbnail file. It stores a low-resolution preview of a larger image to speed up library loading times within the photo editing software. Other systems also use the .COT extension, including Canon CaptureOnTouch for zipped scanner configurations, Brazilian PROCOMP software for bidding quotations, and ATAK for Cursor on Target XML event data.
Capture One creates the thumbnail variants automatically. The tactical military application ATAK uses the XML variant to track geographic events.
The major disadvantage of the .COT format is its highly fragmented nature. Depending on the software that created it, the file could be a JFIF image, a ZIP archive, an XML text file, or a proprietary binary. Standard file viewers fail to open it because the .COT extension masks the true internal data format. Furthermore, Capture One thumbnails are low-quality caches and do not contain the original high-resolution photo data.
To recover data, you must target standard formats based on the internal structure. Capture One thumbnails can often be converted to JPG. ATAK event files safely convert to XML or TXT. Canon scanner configurations can be extracted like standard ZIP archives.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because it lacks a unified standard. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your COT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert COT file to BED, SIN, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES or SAT, you can use Capture One or similar software from the "Image Thumbnail Cache" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to COT, try Capture One or another comparable tool in the "Image Thumbnail Cache" category.
The COT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our COT converter.
