About CNV files
The .cnv extension represents a significant formatting collision between scientific data, graphic design, and system files. The most common variation (approx. 32%) is a Sea-Bird CTD Data File, generated by Sea-Bird Scientific software like Seasave V7. These files store critical oceanographic measurements (conductivity, temperature, depth) converted from raw hex data. While essential for research, they are difficult to analyze directly without specific processing tools. The second major type (approx. 20%) is a Canvas Drawing created by ACD Systems Canvas (formerly Deneba). These proprietary vector graphics files often suffer from version incompatibility (e.g., Canvas 6-8 vs. Canvas X) and cannot be opened by standard web browsers or Adobe Illustrator. Additionally, users may encounter .cnv files as internal converter executables for Microsoft Word, which are system components rather than user documents.
To overcome these accessibility barriers, users should verify the file source before converting. For Sea-Bird data, the best practice is converting to CSV or XLSX to enable analysis in Microsoft Excel or MATLAB. For Canvas drawings, converting to PDF ensures universal viewing, while SVG preserves vector scalability for the web.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CNV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CNV file to SVG, AI, EPS, PDF, JPG, CDR, WMF, EMF, SWF, FLA, XFL or SKETCH, you can use Seasave V7 & Canvas X or similar software from the "Oceanographic Data & Vector Graphics" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The CNV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CNV converter.
