About CLP files

The .CLP file extension predominantly refers to the Windows Clipboard file format, a legacy container used by Microsoft Windows (specifically older versions like XP and NT) to save the contents of the system clipboard to a physical disk file. This format allows users to store "copied" data - which can range from simple plain text and Rich Text Format (.RTF) to complex Bitmap (.BMP) images and OLE objects - for later use.

However, handling .CLP files in modern environments presents significant friction. The dedicated viewer application, clipbrd.exe, is no longer included by default in Windows 10 or Windows 11, leaving users unable to open these archives without finding legacy software or using a third-party tool. Additionally, the format is proprietary and opaque; you often cannot distinguish whether a file contains a graphic or text until you decode it. To restore accessibility, the best practice is to convert these files based on their internal content: transform image-based clipboard files into PNG or JPG for web and editing, and text-based data into PDF or DOCX for archiving.

Note: A distinct, unrelated use of the extension is for CLIPS (C Language Integrated Production System) source code. These are plain text files used in developing expert systems and should be opened with a text editor rather than an image converter.
