About CIN files

The .cin file extension is most heavily associated with the Cineon Image File Format, a raster image format developed by the Eastman Kodak Company to digitally represent scanned motion picture film. A single .CIN file stores one 10-bit logarithmic color frame. The extension is also widely used for proprietary video containers, such as CCTV DVR security footage (e.g., Itx Security), ultrasound cine loops from Mindray medical systems, and older game cinematics from Ubisoft. Additionally, indie games like Forager use .cin as a data container for save files.

Opening a .cin file requires software specific to its origin. Cineon film images require color grading or VFX suites like DaVinci Resolve, Adobe After Effects, or Foundry Nuke. Security and ultrasound .cin videos often demand obscure, proprietary desktop players issued by the hardware manufacturer.

The current formats have major disadvantages. Kodak Cineon is an obsolete legacy format that lacks modern metadata headers and fails to open in standard operating system image viewers; it was entirely superseded by the SMPTE DPX standard. Proprietary CCTV and medical .cin videos are a massive headache because they are locked to hardware-specific codecs, meaning they cannot be played by native media players or uploaded to web browsers.

To overcome these strict limitations, conversion is necessary. For digital film archiving and VFX workflows, convert Cineon files to DPX or EXR to preserve high-dynamic-range data. For quick client reviews or web delivery, convert image frames to JPG or PNG. If you are dealing with a CCTV or ultrasound video, convert it to MP4 to guarantee playback across all consumer devices.
