About CIN files
The .cin extension is primarily associated with two distinct ecosystems: high-end digital film production and gaming. In the professional video industry, it represents the Kodak Cineon format, a legacy standard used to digitize 35mm film. These files store image data in a logarithmic density format, which preserves the dynamic range of film but causes images to appear flat, washed-out, and grey when viewed on standard monitors. Because Cineon files are often uncompressed and proprietary to older workflows, they are difficult to share, large in size (often 10MB+ per frame), and unsupported by standard web browsers or OS viewers like Preview. To fix color issues and compatibility, users should convert Cineon files to DPX (the modern standard), TIFF for archiving, or PNG/JPG for quick previews.
Alternatively, a .cin file may be a Forager Game Save created by the popular open-world game Forager. These are obfuscated binary files stored in system directories, preventing players from easily reading their progress, editing stats, or transferring saves between platforms. Unlike standard text files, they cannot be opened in Notepad without appearing as gibberish. Users looking to modify their game state often seek to convert these binaries into editable JSON or TXT formats. Other niche uses include CCTV footage from older DVR systems and Ultrasound cine loops, both of which require conversion to MP4 for playback on modern devices.

The CIN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CIN converter.
