The .NPL file extension most frequently serves as a Nokia Media Playlist created by legacy software like Nokia PC Suite or Nokia Multimedia Player. These files store the playback order of audio and video files for older Nokia mobile devices, using internal UTF-16 (LE) text encoding. Beyond playlists, an .NPL file may also represent a Natural Programming Language source code file, a CAD plot layout from Nemetschek Allplan, a project file for Xilinx ISE, or a library file for Steinberg Cubase.
The primary disadvantage of the .NPL format is extreme fragmentation. Because multiple distinct programs share the same extension, users are often confused about what their file actually contains. The Nokia variant relies on obsolete, discontinued software, making it impossible to import directly into modern media players like VLC or Spotify.
