Convert a file to CIM
To convert other file formats to the "Multi-format System Data" file type, you need software like GE Cimplicity or a similar tool.
About CIM files
The .CIM file extension represents several completely unrelated, highly proprietary data formats. Most commonly, it is used as a zlib-compressed graphic asset container for rhythm games like Konami Pop'n Music. It is also heavily utilized as a Microsoft Compound HMI/SCADA screen file in GE Cimplicity, as a packaging CAD design file in Cimex CimPACK, and even as firmware updates for Hasselblad cameras.
Users typically need to convert .CIM files to share data outside of these closed ecosystems. For example, a CimPACK CAD layout is useless to an engineer who only has AutoCAD; it needs to be converted to universally readable DXF or PDF files. Similarly, game modders want to extract .CIM game assets into standard PNG or JPG images. GE Cimplicity screen files are entirely locked behind expensive enterprise licenses, making it impossible to view a factory layout without the exact SCADA software installed on the workstation.
Converting a .CIM file is notoriously difficult. Because these formats are closed-source and undocumented, standard online converters will fail completely. Generic tools do not know how to parse a GE SCADA screen, a CimPACK dieline, or a Hasselblad firmware binary. Often, the only reliable way to export the data is by opening the file in the original software, like Cimex CimCAD or the Hasselblad Firmware Update Tool, and exporting the data manually.
However, you do not need to guess which version of a .CIM file you have. Our analyzer inspects the binary headers to detect if the file is an OLE container, a zlib stream, or raw text. If we detect supported embedded assets, viewing or extracting them to common formats may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CIM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CIM file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use GE Cimplicity or similar software from the "Rhythm Game Graphic Assets" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to CIM, try GE Cimplicity or another comparable tool in the "Rhythm Game Graphic Assets" category.
The CIM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CIM converter.
