The .CID (Configured IED Description) file is predominantly an XML-based configuration file defined by the IEC 61850 standard. It stores specific communication settings and parameters for a single Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) within power substation automation systems. While technically readable as text, the complex schema makes raw analysis difficult without specialized SCL editors like Siemens DIGSI or Helinks STS. Users often need to convert these files to PDF for documentation or standard XML for easier parsing in web browsers and text editors.
Alternatively, a .CID file may be a legacy PostScript CID-keyed font developed by Adobe. These fonts are often incompatible with modern operating systems and design software like Adobe Illustrator, creating a need to convert them to standard OTF or TTF formats. Rarely, .CID files are simply renamed PNG or JPG images generated by email clients or the Picsart editor, which can be fixed by converting them back to standard image formats.
