About INETLOC files
A .INETLOC file is a macOS system file known as an Internet Location, typically created by the Apple Finder or Safari when dragging a network address or URL to the desktop. While efficient for Mac users, these files are a significant source of friction for cross-platform workflows. The primary disadvantage is their proprietary nature; a .INETLOC file generally will not function on Microsoft Windows or Linux systems, leaving the user with an unopenable icon. Furthermore, the internal structure can be a binary Property List (plist) rather than plain text, meaning you cannot simply open it in a basic text editor to retrieve the link without seeing garbled data.
For users needing to share links across different operating systems, converting these files is essential. To make the link accessible on Windows, the best target format is URL, which is natively recognized by Internet Explorer and modern browsers. For universal archiving or simple data retrieval, converting to TXT allows you to extract the raw address string. If you are staying within the Apple ecosystem but require the more standard web shortcut format, converting to WEBLOC is recommended.
Convert.Guru analyzes your INETLOC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted PDF, TEXTCLIPPING, CID, WEBLOC, BLOB, ZIP, DS_STORE, CRDOWNLOAD, DOWNLOAD, WEBARCHIVE and BINARYCOOKIES files.
The INETLOC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our INETLOC converter.
