About CI files
The .ci file extension is a classic example of filename overloading, used by at least three completely distinct industries, making identification difficult without context.
1. Flow Cytometry Data (Scientific): The most common modern use is by BD Biosciences for the Accuri C6 flow cytometer. These files store experiment data and instrument settings. The real problem here is proprietary lock-in; researchers often cannot open these files in third-party analysis tools (like FlowJo or Excel) without first converting them. Since these files are sometimes structured as ZIP containers, users can occasionally inspect contents by renaming the extension, but the reliable workflow involves exporting to FCS (Flow Cytometry Standard) or CSV for publication and peer review.
2. GCC Call Information (Developer): In software development, the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) generates .ci files containing call graph information. These are intermediate files used during the compilation process to map function calls. They are not meant for human editing. If you need to visualize this data, you typically convert the graph info into a DOT file for use with Graphviz.
3. Industrial Automation (PLC): Users of CODESYS or Siemens SIMATIC PLCs encounter .ci files as component fragments of a larger project. These are useless in isolation and must be opened within the full project context in the IDE.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted VCG, PNG, JPG, PDF, MAT, EDF, MLX, CC, JMD and MCI files.
The CI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CI converter.
