The .ch extension primarily denotes a Chromatography Data Signal File generated by Agilent ChemStation, a dominant software suite used in analytical chemistry for gas (GC) and liquid (LC) chromatography. Secondary uses include recovered JPG images generated by tools like PC Inspector File Recovery, C/C++ header files for the Clipper compiler, and xBase database memo files.
The main disadvantage of the Agilent .ch format is its strictly proprietary binary structure. It is designed to lock users into the expensive ChemStation ecosystem. You cannot natively open these files in standard data analysis tools like Excel, Python, or R without complex reverse-engineering or specialized parsers. For recovered images, the arbitrary .ch extension breaks compatibility with default OS image viewers, requiring manual intervention.
To make this data usable, conversion is mandatory. For scientific data, converting or extracting to CSV or XLSX is best for editing and analysis.
