The .CE file format primarily functions as an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) vocabulary backup file utilized by the TouchChat iOS application. These files store custom vocabulary sets, page layouts, voice settings, and linked images to assist users with speech and language disabilities. A secondary, highly obsolete use for the .CE extension is the ComputerEyes image format, developed by Digital Vision for early microcomputers like the Apple II and Commodore 64.
Modern .CE files are typically managed via the TouchChat app or its desktop companion, Chat Editor. However, under the hood, TouchChat .CE files are standard ZIP archives holding SQLite databases and media assets. You can inspect the contents natively on a PC using standard archiving tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR.
The primary disadvantage of the .CE format is its rigid, proprietary nature. Sharing vocabulary layouts with speech-language pathologists, educators, or family members requires them to own the expensive TouchChat software environment. Furthermore, the legacy ComputerEyes image format is completely unsupported by modern operating systems and web browsers, rendering the historical image data inaccessible.
To overcome these limitations, conversion or extraction is necessary. For TouchChat data, rename the file or convert it to ZIP to access the underlying images and text data. If you are dealing with legacy ComputerEyes files, you must convert them to PNG or JPG to view them on modern devices.
