About CE files

The .CE file extension represents two distinct formats, but modern users most frequently encounter it as a vocabulary backup for TouchChat, a leading AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) app for iOS. These files contain custom communication boards, button layouts, and recorded voice settings used by individuals with speech disabilities.

A common downside is the proprietary lock-in; while the file allows transferring vocabularies between iPads via iTunes or Dropbox, it appears as an unreadable binary on Windows or Android. However, the internal format is often a standard ZIP archive containing XML configurations and media assets. Users needing to extract specific symbols or check data without the app can often simply rename the extension from .CE to .ZIP and open it with any archive manager.

In legacy computing contexts (circa 1980s-90s), a .CE file is a raw raster image generated by Digital Vision ComputerEyes video digitizers. These files are now obsolete and unsupported by modern web browsers. To view or preserve these vintage images, they must be converted to standard formats like PNG or JPG using specialized viewers like XnView MP.
