Most commonly, it is an agricultural census data archive published by organizations like the Philippine Statistics Authority. Under the hood, these are standard ZIP containers holding tabular CSV data. The second major use case is in the automotive engineering industry. Here, .can files act as Controller Area Network (CAN) bus logs or CAPL (CAN Access Programming Language) scripts. These files are generated by automotive diagnostic software like Vector CANalyzer, Vector CANoe, or Microchip analyzers. In rare instances, a .can file may also be an Adobe Photoshop canvas file (internally structured like a PSD) or a Canon Navigator fax document.
Handling .can files is frustrating because the extension alone does not guarantee the internal format. If you receive an automotive CAN log, the data is usually locked inside proprietary engineering software.
