The .BWT extension serves two distinct, incompatible purposes, creating significant confusion for users.
Most commonly today, it represents a Label Design Template created by Brady Workstation. These files define the layout, barcodes, and safety compliance data for industrial printing. The primary constraint is proprietary lock-in: these files are essentially useless without the expensive Brady software suite and often require a specific printer driver to render correctly. Users cannot simply open them in Microsoft Word or Adobe Illustrator. To share designs with clients or colleagues who lack the software, you must convert the .BWT template into a universal format like PDF for proofing or JPG for quick visual verification.
Historically, .BWT also refers to the BlindWrite Table of Contents file, a legacy format by VSO Software used for backing up copy-protected CD/DVDs. In this context, the file is merely a lightweight map of the disc structure and contains zero actual data. A frequent problem is users attempting to convert the .BWT file alone, which results in errors. It must be paired with its companion data file (usually BWI or BIN) to be functional.
