About BWA files
The .BWA file extension is most notably associated with BlindWrite, a disc backup utility developed by VSO Software. specifically representing the audio portion of a disc image dump (often labeled as Binary Wave Audio). When backing up mixed-mode CDs (which contain both data and audio tracks, like older PC games), BlindWrite splits the data into separate files: BWI (image data), BWT (control file), and .BWA (audio tracks).
The Problem: Because .BWA files are raw PCM audio dumps wrapped in a proprietary container, standard media players like Windows Media Player or VLC often fail to recognize them, and modern mounting software like Daemon Tools may struggle if the accompanying .BWT file is missing. This format is essentially "locked" to the legacy BlindWrite ecosystem or specific emulators.
The Solution: For archiving or listening, the best approach is to convert .BWA files to standard WAV or MP3 audio formats. If you are trying to restore a game disc, you typically need to convert the entire set (.BWT/.BWI/.BWA) into a single ISO or .BIN/.CUE image.
Secondary Use Case: In the context of casual gaming, a .BWA file may also be a user profile or save file for Bookworm Adventures by PopCap Games. These are small data files containing progress logs and cannot be converted to audio or image formats.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BWA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted BWI, BWT and B5I files.
The BWA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BWA converter.
