The .BPG file is a Better Portable Graphics image. Created by programmer Fabrice Bellard, it uses the intra-frame encoding of the HEVC (H.265) video standard to store high-quality images at a fraction of the size of a standard JPG. You can decode it using the official BPG Image Decoder or command-line tools like ImageMagick.
The main problem with .BPG is poor hardware and software adoption. Because HEVC is encumbered by software patents, major web browsers refuse to support it natively. Webmasters must load a heavy JavaScript polyfill just to display .BPG images on a website. Today, it is largely considered a dead format, replaced by open alternatives like WEBP and AVIF.
You must convert .BPG to JPG, PNG, or WEBP for standard use. Converting to JPG will drop the alpha channel if the original image has transparency. Converting to PNG retains transparency but drastically increases the file size.
Standard online converters often fail to process .BPG because it requires specialized, heavily licensed HEVC decoding libraries. Furthermore, some .BPG files are not images at all; the extension is also used for ABB ACS800 industrial drive parameter backups and Borland Project Group developer files.
