About BPG files

The .BPG (Better Portable Graphics) file is a high-efficiency image format created by famous programmer Fabrice Bellard to replace the aging JPEG. It uses the HEVC (H.265) video compression standard to deliver significantly smaller file sizes with higher visual quality than JPG, supporting up to 14-bit color depth and alpha transparency.

However, .BPG failed to gain native support in major web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) or operating systems. To view these files on a website, developers must embed a 56KB JavaScript decoder, which causes performance friction. On a desktop, you likely cannot open them with default apps like Windows Photos or macOS Preview.

For universal compatibility, the best workflow is converting .BPG to JPG for sharing or WebP for modern web use.

Critical Warning: A significant minority (~11%) of .BPG files are actually Drive Parameter Backup files from ABB ACS800 industrial drives. These are binary configuration files used by ABB DriveWindow software and cannot be converted to images. Always verify the source before converting.
