About RGBA files
The .RGBA file format is a legacy raster image developed by Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI) for their high-end UNIX workstations. It stores raw bitmap pixel data across four color channels: Red, Green, Blue, and an Alpha channel for transparency.
Historically, these files were opened natively on IRIX machines or used in early 3D compositing workflows. Today, you can access .RGBA files using legacy image viewers, professional suites like Adobe Photoshop, or open-source editors like GIMP. You can read more about its architecture on the Silicon Graphics Image Wikipedia page.
Modern users face significant limitations with .RGBA files. The format is obsolete and completely unsupported by modern web browsers, mobile devices, and standard operating system preview tools. Additionally, these files use simple Run-Length Encoding (RLE) or remain entirely uncompressed, resulting in excessively large file sizes. Sending an .RGBA file to a client almost guarantees they will be unable to open it without downloading specialized third-party software.
Conversion is the most practical solution. For web publishing or preserving the critical alpha transparency layer, convert to PNG or WEBP. If you only need to view the image and want to drastically reduce the file size, convert to JPG (note that the transparency channel will be lost and replaced with a flat background). Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The RGBA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RGBA converter.
