About BNR files

A .BNR file is a proprietary binary archive primarily used by Nintendo consoles, including the Wii, GameCube, Nintendo DS, and 3DS. Its main purpose is to store the graphical banners, 3D animations, text, and audio that display in the console's system menu when a game is selected. Because these files are strictly designed for console hardware, they are inherently complex and not meant for standard consumer viewing.

The biggest disadvantage of the .BNR format is its closed, proprietary nature. You cannot open these files natively on Windows, macOS, or Linux, and standard image viewers cannot parse the proprietary texture compression formats (like TPL) hidden inside. Furthermore, modifying these files requires specialized homebrew software, such as the Wii Banner Tool.

Users typically want to convert .BNR files to extract the underlying artwork into standard formats like PNG or JPG, or unpack the entire structure into a ZIP archive. However, converting the banner directly often results in a loss of the layered 3D animations and bundled audio tracks (like BNS files).

Because this is a closed format, standard online converters almost always fail to process it. Only the original software or specialized extraction utilities can properly read the data. Our tool can inspect the binary file and often reveal its internal structure. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like an uncompressed graphic or a standard U8 archive - extraction or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BNR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PNG, BMP, TPL, JPG, MP4, ISO, BIN, TIF and WDP files.
