The .BML file extension is notoriously fragmented, serving dozens of completely unrelated software applications. Most frequently, it functions as a game configuration binary XML file used by Creative Assembly for titles like Alien: Isolation, or as game data for Milestone S.r.l. racing games. It is also utilized within the Sony PlayStation ecosystem as a Binary Markup Language file, and by emulators like bsnes or Snes9x to store Super Nintendo cheat databases. Minor, obscure uses include CAD reinforcement schedules in Nemetschek Allplan, satellite receiver configurations, and even saved emails from the Rosreestr Cadastre Service.
Because .BML files are usually compiled proprietary binary formats, they present significant editing challenges. You cannot simply open a binary .BML file in a standard text editor like Notepad; the data will appear as garbled text or cause the editor to crash. Modders and developers often struggle to edit game parameters because these files require specific unpackers or game-engine tools to decrypt. Furthermore, this extreme lack of standardization means a .BML file from a PlayStation game cannot be read by an SNES emulator or CAD software.
