A .BMK file is a highly fragmented, multi-purpose file extension generally used to store bookmarks, metadata, or software-specific state information. Its most widespread application is as an audio recording bookmark created by professional dictation software, such as Philips SpeechExec or Verint Interview Recorder. However, the exact same extension is heavily overloaded. It can function as a legacy mobile browser bookmark for Nokia Series 40 phones, a disk benchmark results file formatted in XML for ATTO Disk Benchmark, a media thumbnail marker in CyberLink PowerDVD, or even a backup file for the BillMinder iOS app.
The most significant disadvantage of the .BMK format is this extreme fragmentation. Because there is no universal standard, a .BMK generated by a Philips dictation device is completely incompatible with one created by ATTO Disk Benchmark. Furthermore, these files almost never contain actual media. If you are dealing with an audio or video bookmark, the .BMK file only stores timestamps and index pointers. If you lose the main associated media file (such as the DSS or DS2 dictation audio), the bookmark file is entirely useless on its own. Older iterations, like Nokia device bookmarks, effectively trap your data in obsolete, inaccessible proprietary containers.
Converting .BMK files is the only pragmatic workaround to extract readable data or migrate away from dead platforms.
