About BFL files

A .bfl file primarily functions as a Blackbox flight data log generated by Betaflight or Cleanflight drone flight controller firmware. It records raw sensor telemetry, motor outputs, and control stick inputs during a flight. Alternatively, a .bfl file acts as a game data archive for the Codemasters game Colin McRae Rally, or a backup file for Quicken Legal Business Pro.

Drone pilots need to analyze these logs to tune PID controllers or troubleshoot hardware failures. However, the .bfl flight log is a highly compressed, proprietary binary format. It is not human-readable. You cannot open it natively in a web browser, and standard text editors will just show garbage characters. Attempting to share these files directly with non-pilots is useless unless they install the dedicated Betaflight Blackbox Explorer.

If you want to view the data in a standard spreadsheet, you must convert the .bfl file to a standard CSV format. Game archives have a different problem: they are locked to the specific game engine. Fortunately, the Colin McRae Rally .bfl file is secretly just a standard GZ (GZIP) compressed archive. Extracting it yields the internal game assets, but requires a tool that ignores the fake extension.

Because of these proprietary and split use-cases, standard online converters usually fail to process .bfl files. They lack the specific Betaflight parsing logic or fail to recognize the hidden GZIP headers. Just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. We can inspect the internal file headers to figure out what type of .bfl you actually have. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format like a GZIP stream or an executable payload, extraction or conversion may still be possible.

The BFL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BFL converter.
