About BLACK files
A .black file is a proprietary Object Definition file used exclusively by the Trinity 2 (Tr2) game engine, which powers the massively multiplayer space simulation EVE Online. These files function as binary blueprints that instruct the game engine how to assemble complex 3D assets, defining how geometry (Granny 3D .GR2 files), textures (DDS), and shaders interact to render ships, stations, and celestial bodies.
Because .black files are compiled specifically for the Trinity engine, they are incompatible with standard 3D modeling software like Blender or Autodesk Maya. Users typically encounter these files when exploring the EVE Online shared cache or attempting to extract game assets for fan art, 3D printing, or machinima. Attempting to open them in a text editor yields illegible binary code. To make use of the data inside, you must use specialized community-developed extraction tools (such as TriExporter or EVE Resource Viewer) to parse the definition and export the underlying 3D models and textures into usable formats like OBJ, FBX, or PNG.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BLACK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BLACK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BLACK converter.
