The .BBL file extension primarily represents a BibTeX Bibliography file, an intermediate text-based format used in the LaTeX typesetting system. These files are automatically generated by BibTeX from a source BIB database to format references according to a specific style (like APA or IEEE). Because they are auxiliary files meant for the compiler, they are often overwritten during the build process and contain raw formatting code that is difficult for humans to read comfortably. Users typically need to convert these to PDF (by compiling the associated .TEX file) for final publication, or to HTML/Markdown if moving documentation to the web.
Alternatively, a .BBL file may be a Blackbox Flight Log recorded by Betaflight firmware on FPV drones. These are binary data files that capture high-frequency sensor data (gyro, PID loop, motors) used for tuning and troubleshooting. The raw binary format is completely unreadable in standard text editors. To analyze flight performance or overlay data onto video, pilots must convert these logs to CSV (for spreadsheets), GPX/KML (for mapping), or use Blackbox Explorer to visualize the data.
