About BAG files

The .BAG file format is primarily used by the Robot Operating System (ROS) to store serialized message data from sensors, cameras, and motors. A secondary, but highly critical, use case is the Bathymetric Attributed Grid (BAG) format, which uses the HDF5 standard to store marine navigation and sonar depth data.

These files are notoriously difficult to work with outside of their native environments. ROS .BAG files often exceed gigabytes in size and contain continuous, high-frequency binary data streams. You typically need a fully configured Linux environment running ROS to replay or extract this data. Similarly, marine BAG files require specialized GIS software or HDF5 libraries to parse the multi-dimensional grid arrays. Standard web browsers and basic text editors cannot read either version of this format.

Users frequently need to convert .BAG files to CSV, JSON, or TXT to analyze specific sensor metrics in standard data science tools like Pandas or Excel. Converting video streams out of a ROS bag into MP4 or extracting JPG frames is also a common requirement for machine learning pipelines.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert online because it relies on proprietary serialization or complex HDF5 container logic. Standard online converters fail because they lack the specific message definitions required to decode the binary payloads. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BAG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RESOURCE, UPL, EVE, BACKPACK, MT, MP4, DB3 and CSV files.

The BAG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BAG converter.
